Ricky Swallow - 'Together is the New Alone'
Ricky Swallow's 'Together is the New Alone' is a sculpture which utilises jelutong, epoxy putty and glass. Jelutong is a low-density would which would make it perfect for carving and shaping whereas epoxy putty is a extremely mouldable. Swallows may have created the sculpture's main elemenys out of wood and the details with the putty and glass. Being such a small sculpture (only 15cm in length) the work would've been quite difficult to sculpt.
Piccinini- 'The Young Family'
Picinini's 'The Young Family' consists of silicone, acrylic, human hair, leather and timber. The combination of natural and man-made materials helps her portray the issue of genetic manipulation. Piccinini would've made a mold or cast of her subject first. This would then be filled wit silicone and left to set. Once the basis structure and shape was achieved, attention to detail could be applied. Here Piccinini would add human hair to the artificial model and manipulate its appearance. The life-sized sculpture would then be placed upon the mat to set the scene of the piece.
